Monday Night

They are still a few churches around that are able to keep their doors open throughout the day and into the evening, so people can stop in for a visit and some quiet. Other churches have built small, separate "adoration chapels".

Of course, one can find spiritual presence all over: by the shore, near mountains, even down a city street or on a crowded bus. "Wherever I turn I see your face", says the Koran. But there is something conducive to interior prayer in a spot, a geographical plot of land, where, as in the case of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, people, particularly people whose homelands were elsewhere, have gathered for over 80 years. You can almost feel their presence in the wood and the marble.

"Be still and know I Am."
